surrealism is the term used for weird and wonderful art work which was a broad interlectual movement between the 1920s and 1960s, these are the dates used but may have been happening before. it was between the world wars as a development of DADA as a reponse to the crisis happening. it also was a response to the pschanalalytical investigations by freud which was happening just before the 1920s.which showed a male dominant enviroment. it was the truth beyond the real.
this art movement was coined by guillaume apollinaire and appropriated by andre breton who was a significant figure in DADA
it still used as inspiration and happening today, the surrealism art part anyway.
