hair dress - final piece
i started off with the crochet as i liked what i already had i just needed something else adding to finish it off so i added strips of fabric to hold it in place
back view - this also gave it more details
i were going to just add more origami but decided against this as i wanted something to contrast the harsh lines and shapes and wanted something that gave impact but not too much that the head piece weren't the main thing
thats when i decided on hair, i was watching the addams family and cousin it worked really well but i wanted to keep a bit a structure so when i stuck it to the strips of fabric i did it in the shape of a dress such as the neck line to keep at feminine feel to it
this shows the contrasting feeling in diana and basically what i've been talking about with the other elements within this piece

head piece - conclusion
excuse the onesie!

i decided to do this as i werent happy with the dress but liked the style and materials, so this would be wore with the waxed crochet and black underneath.
idea behind
i wanted to look into the diana story a little further than just creating a garment from a part of the story so i decided to look into diana mental state - if thats what you call it. anyway she come across as this strong women, this 'goddess' but becomes quite fragile when things don't go her way and doesn't handle them very well such as acteon seeing her in the state of undress. this idea gave me an idea for materials and thats exactly where the paper came from. i decided on paper as its fragile, not waterproof etc, but can look strong and masculine when folded and i liked the idea of the contrasting feelings. this is why i also did the crochet in wax as this did the opposite, it looked feminine and fragile but because of the wax and the multiple crossing of wool became quite strong. i would wear both pieces together as i think they compliment each other.
colour
i used black and white to work with in the beginning as it was easy but the more i looked into colours and why i would use them the more i stuck with them. when making the head piece i did look into making a coloured one or just adding hints but decided against it. i did this as white suggests innocence and purity, where as the black shows dianas darker side. as diana continues throughout the stories to come across as this pure goddess when really she isn't, she actually not that nice! so wearing it on my head and across my body show a shield, a facade of what she wants people to see her as whereas underneath she isn't, also showing that shes not confident in being a woman maybe?shape
i did a head piece in the end as when diana is bathing she doesn't want to be seen, and when researching when people head are covered there a lot more confident in the way they look so this is why i decided this. i also went for a bikers helmet shape instead of a circle as it again suggests protection. when it came to the crochet piece i wanted a lot more feminine look so followed the lines of the body and emphasising it by pulling it in at areas and stretching it at others
overall im a lot happy with my outcome than before though i wish id come to this idea a little earlier so i could develop it.

knitting
''The oldest artifact with a knitted appearance is a type of sock. It is believed that socks and stockings were the first pieces produced using techniques similar to knitting. These socks were worked in Nålebinding, a technique of making fabric by creating multiple knots or loops with a single needle and thread. Many of these existing clothing items employed nålebinding techniques; some of them look very similar to true knitting, for example, 3rd-5th century CE Romano-Egyptian toe-socks. Several pieces, done in now obscure techniques, have been mistaken for knitting or crocheting.
Most histories of knitting place its origin somewhere in the Middle East, from there it spread to Europe by Mediterranean trade routes, and then to the Americas with European colonization. The earliest known examples of knitting have been found in Egypt and cover a range of items, including complex colorful wool fragments and indigo blue and white cotton stockings, which have been dated between the 11th and 14th centuries CE''
looking into the 'knot you average knit' i found quite a few piece of contemporary art that really caught my eye including this piece from karen margolis in 2009. the piece is cotton covered wire-annealed wire -acrylic
final piece idea
i stuck to the crochet piece as i think it links with the metamorphosis title really well with it being fagile and delicate looking but quite strong due to wax fits with diana being a woman and also the goddess of the hunt, i also think it describes the state of her mind as she seems to be strong minded but something as simple as acteon seeing her sets her off to kill him which shows she isn't as strong as she thinks she is and its her way of being in control
after many designs as to what to do on the other side i decided to stick to paper as i think its like the opposite of the waxed crochet, the paper looks strong with the straight lines and harsh structure but its fragile and could rip easily. this is why i decided not to reinforce the paper with pva glue or such like as i liked the vulnerability of it
still unsure what to do with the back im thinking some kind of neck piece and a very simple back and to put it on one of my old dresses so it can be worn but i have already started to make a top so i may lengthen the bottom of that and use that as it may be easier to get on and off
also i plan on adding a little colour to the edges of the paper
wax and crochet
i started off by putting something id crocheted in wax and moulded it to the plastic mannequin first with the side of the body and then around the head
i dont feel the face mould worked as well and think that the piece of crochet could be used in a different more interesting way
i started at looking at different ways to use this piece in a more architectural way as it was so delicate and feminine but still gave structure. i also liked the way that you could still see the bodys influence through the stretching and shrinking over the body parts. i think it could work as a sculpture by itself
as crochet is so timecomsuming i used an old scarf someone found and decided to experiment with that and it helped getting the forms i wanted but it was dis coloured and just looked manky i also don't like the pattern as much as the shell crochet i had used to begin with
i really like the way it comes off the table and rises up i think the shape of it really works but also the colour as its gentle on the eye
